Wrap: Sex Rehab’s Phil Varone and Jeff and Greg Burns from NCIS

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

We got musical with drummer Phil Varone, fresh from his stint on VH1’s Sex Rehab. From elsewhere in TV land we welcomed award-winning composers Jeff and Greg Burns from TV’s #1 show, NCIS.

Burns brothers

Watch this show on www.theStream.tv

If you’ve seen at least one Live! From the Future episode, you know by now just how much we like music. Appropriately for our tastes, we had a trio of musical guests this episode - twin TV composers Jeff and Greg Burns, and drummer/standup comedian Phil Varone.

Phil.Stu

Shocking though it may be, Phil and Stuart still use less combined hair product than Bret Michaels.

Before the troika settled into the guest chairs, we naturally had to celebrate the great December holiday. No, not Christmas, silly. December 8 is Jessie Schneiderman’s birthday, of course! So we celebrated in exuberant yet severely budget-constrained style by showering her with balloons and booze… bad idea.

Don't drink kids. This...

Down goes #4! Don't drink kids... because this...

Jessie.Preggers

... can lead to this. (*10 minutes after her shots, she was 9 months pregnant.)

The brothers Burns were up first, and they brought Jessie - whoops, the show - a special present. The two somehow found time in their busy schedule to score a clip from LFTF. We like challenging our guests, so the clip we provided was of Current TV’s Conor Knighton demonstrating how to properly arrange a paper toilet seat liner.

Jeff.Greg.Stu

What you can't see in this picture is that the beard in only on one half of his face, while his brother has half a beard on the other side.

One segment that might have a fighting chance is “Prog Rock or NCIS Episode“. This thrilling, down-to-the-wire quiz tests deep entertainment knowledge and reveals just how much time a person wasted getting high as a teenager and listening to ponderous old music.

The brothers nearly took a fall on that one, saving themselves at the last moment by identifying a Genesis album.

This guy is the Cat's Pajamas

Missing: One hunky guitar player and my summer blue polo shirt.

We didn’t torture the brothers enough with inane questions, so we also put them through our patented “59 Second Gauntlet“. Jeff and Greg were more successful at that one, getting all the way through past the final question, the all-time stumper “my career is like breakfast because ________?”

Next up was Phil Varone, an old friend of the show (read: “person who’s crazy enough to do this thing more than once”). Phil’s getting a lot of attention these days thanks to his current stint on Sex Rehab with celebrity brain fixer Dr. Drew Pinsky.

Stu.Phil2

After getting out of Sex Rehab, Phil explained why his wrist has been cramping up.

When not recovering from his sex problem, Phil finds time to do standup and play drums, not necessarily in that order. He couldn’t resist dropping a plug for his upcoming hosting gig at LA’s Improv, where he’ll be introducing the Sex, Stand Up and Rock & Roll show.

Jessie.John.Singing

Happy Birthday Jessie... You're the Best-y... (real lyrics).

Unlike his fellow musicians the Burns twins, Phil didn’t quite make it through his edition of “59 Second Gauntlet”. Perhaps it was that one missing second that threw him. Either way, we still like him, and we’ll happily have him on as a guest again. As long as he isn’t too busy chatting with Oprah, that is.

Musetta Vander from Transylmania!

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

We give thanks for vampires, 800 year old Romanian castles and our guests, actress Musetta Vander and directors Scott and David Hillenbrand of the upcoming horror comedy feature, Transylmania.

Musetta

See this episode - in color! - at www.theStream.tv

As anyone in Los Angeles will tell you, Halloween in this city stretches pretty far past October 31. For us, it’s lasted well into Thanksgiving, as we hosted a troika of guests from the soon-to-be-released vampire spoof, Transylmania - in theaters December 4th, 2009.

LIVE_Transylmania

Directors Scott and David Hillenbrand, actress Musetta Vander, Stuart Paap, Andrea Ball and Stu’s special friend, John “mall pose” Fulton.

We did kowtow a little to the current holiday. We effected this in true, grand LIVE! From the Future… style with Stu venting about the worst Thanksgiving side dishes ever. His candidates? Yams with those ugly little wet marshmallows.

LIVE_Andrea.IM

Andrea Ball (andreaball.com) gets ready to take some live Instant Messages in her "Beat It" edition jacket. Smooth, criminal baby!

Our IM Girl for the evening, the lovely and vivacious Andrea Ball (substituting for Jessie Schneiderman), volunteered green beans as her least favorite side dish, and LFTF’s musical director, John Fulton, piped up that he hated cranberry sauce. Communist! At least that’s what I think he said; honestly, nobody pays him any attention when he’s not playing music.

LIVE_JohnFulton

LIVE_Jared.Greenhouse

Jared "I brought the tripods and legal releases" Greenhouse shows us his one-handed technique.

Subsequent to this discussion, we welcomed Musetta Vander, one of the stars of Transylmania, who plays vampire hunter Teodora van Sloan (which, coincidentally, is also the name of John Fulton’s transvestite lounge singer alter ego).

LIVE_Musetta

Actress Musetta Vander, aka "Teodora Van Sloan" from the new comedy feature "Transylmania" talks about Zip Lining from a castle, training with knives and the countless ways she could punish Stu.

Cheerful Musetta talked about her experiences on the (freezing cold Romanian) set of Transylmania, which included delivering her lines in an Eastern European accent (hot!), taking sword fighting lessons for a month (er, not that kind of sword fighting), and training in martial arts.

LIVE_Musetta.Desk

Musetta Vander sharpens her fingers as she prepares to stab Stu in the neck - vampire-style.

Then it was time for Musetta to play: “Ikea or Romanian Town?” Thanks to our little quiz, Musetta is now well acquainted with the best cheap pillowcases the Swedes have to offer, and the countless Romanian towns that no one can pronounce. Who says you don’t learn anything on our show?

John tries to convince Andrea that women actually like his sweater.

John tries to convince Andrea that some women actually like his sweater.

Next up were Musetta’s former bosses, Scott and David Hillenbrand, the directors of Transylmania. Scott and David have tag-teamed for over half a dozen movies, including National Lampoon Presents: Dorm Daze, and their collaboration reaches back far in the past - they’ve been making films together since childhood.

LIVE_Stu.Scott.David

Scott and David Hillenbrand listen unenthusiastically to Stu's movie pitches, inlcuding: "Octopus Outfielder: the life and times of Duke McNutts", "Tardball", the unofficial sequel to Dodgeball and "Earnest goes to Hometown Buffet", the proposed 15th installment of the beloved "Earnest goes to..." series.

We tested just how strong those bonds really are by putting the brothers through our notorious “59 Second Gauntlet” (formerly the “60 Second Gauntlet”, now shaved for budgetary reasons). Scott fired off a few quick and theoretically correct answers, but David struggled to come up with a meaningful comeback or two - one stumper was, “Biggest jerk in high school?” Might I propose example “A” below?

LIVE_John.Fulton

John Fulton was a bouncer at LL Bean.

Wow, all that questioning and zip lining and Ikea catalog itemizing really made us hungry. We’re gonna feast for a few days, then we’ll see you at the usual time next Tuesday for a fresh new show. Until then, happy Thanksgiving from all of us LFTFers. Pass the yams and marshmallows, will ya?

Davis from CBS’s “Accidentally on Purpose”, Mitch Fatel on Tuesday!

Sunday, November 8th, 2009

Election day last Tuesday and we voted in a DOUBLE SHOW !

The 1st show was @8PM, and featured 2 guests: A) sitcom writer Andrea Abbate and B) actor Nicolas Wright, both from CBS’s hit comedy “Accidentally on Purpose” - (Mondays at 8:30 on CBS).

Watch Nicolas Wright and Andrea Abbate on www.theStream.tv

And our 2nd show was @9PM, and featured thriller-dancing thespian Leyna Weber and culinary-enthusiast/history-nerd actor Hal B. Klein!

1Leyna

Watch Leyna Weber and Hal B.Klein on www.theStream.tv!

25% of the night’s guests was our first: comedy writer Andrea Abbate. Andrea works on the truly hilarious new CBS sitcom “Accidentally on Purpose” starring Jenna Elfman. Watch it after “How I met your mother” and then, just don’t leave the couch. “2 1/2 men” comes on after “Accidentally” and there’s your night!

Stu.Andrea

Stu smiles through his botox while comedy writer Andrea Abbate waits patiently.

Stu grilled her mercilessly about her experiences on the show and the live chat room followed suit (we are a live and interactive show), but the most compelling question from the chatties - Do the actors ever bribe writers to get more lines? We can’t say what she said - but, if you’ve ever seen a corpulent comedy writer, you already know the answer.

Nic.Andrea.Stu

Andrea Abbate, Nicolas Wright and Stuart “reflect” on the show.

Young actor Nicolas Wright was up next. Nicolas is Canadian, which makes him exotic, interesting, and possibly a Communist. (Hey, isn’t Stu Canadian? We’re calling a Mountie just to check if he’s on a milk carton.)

On Accidentally on Purpose, Nic plays Davis, a freeloading associate of the show’s lead character, Billie.

Nic.Skateboard

Nicolas plays the “slap skateboard” - angry letters from Victor Wooten followed. (Just Google “Victor Wooten Bass”)

Nicolas talked about getting started in acting, getting to L.A., and he brought TONS of SWAG - including several shooting signed scripts, 4 signed photos of the cast and, a working skateboard, that’s not only been used on the first 8 episodes, but was also signed by the show’s actors.

These prizes were given away to chat roomers who could answer Nic’s trivia questions about the show. Rumors abound that John Fulton used a series of chat room surrogates to claim several of the gifts; the LFTF Investigative Unit is currently conducting inquiries and taking DNA samples from cans of Evo to ascertain the truth.

John.11.3.09

John Fulton thinks about which John Mayer song to rip off. At least it wasn’t “Your body is a wonderland”

Stu.Leyna

Actress Leyna Weber teaches Stu how to properly do the pottery scene from “Ghost”

Show number two got off to a kicking start - literally - with energetic guest Leyna Weber. She’s the star of the web series “Road to the Altar”, playing a stressed bride-to-be getting hitched to Jaleel White (Urkel in “Family Matters”). She also taught the Thriller dance, leading LFTF ace Producer LV, TheStream.TV’s Chloe and the ever-flexible Jessie.

Jessie.Thinking

Jessie wonders if “going commando” was a good idea after doing the Thriller dance.

Last (and definitely least - kidding, Hal!), it was time to EAT with actor and self-taught gourmet Hal B. Klein. Hal plays interesting characters in such films as Bottle Shock and Nobel Son, but is also a pretty deep character himself. He’s a self-professed history geek and a proficient cook in his free moments (Check out his website Thismanskitchen.com)

We made him prove his history geekitude in a rousing round of ‘Stache or not?, in which the object was, to identify which U.S. Presidents had facial hair. John and Stu made a wager to see if Hal was THAT good - John said: “Yes” and Stu said “No way!” Who won?!

Hal.B.Klein.Cooking

Hal B Klein making organic basil-pesto sauce on LIVE! From the future…

Jessie.Loving.It

Hal inquired whether or not Jessie wanted to taste his “sauce”.

Hurtling through space… at an alarming rate! Episode 1

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

Hurtling Through Space at an Alarming Rate! - an absurdist sci-fi comedy series that follows the adventures of Mike Davies Jr. and Stuart Paap.

Hurtling!

These two golf and game-obsessed pop-culture buffs are trapped in their apartment as it’s literally hurtling through space at an alarming rate!

Everything still works; all the comforts of home are remarkably intact. Moreover, friends, family, and even the pizza guy can come and go as they please through the back door - just not Mike and Stuart.

Each episode (6 in total, debuting every Monday on Babelgum.com/htsaaar) finds the apartment landing on an odd planet, often inhabited by slightly meddlesome creatures. Faced with a new predicament, viewers are left to ponder: “Will they get off this planet?”

Tonight: DOUBLE SHOW Tuesday! Nicolas Wright, Andrea Abbate & Hal B. Klein, Leyna Weber!

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

Remember those old Doublemint gum commercials? The ones with the pretty twins singing jingles about doubling your pleasure, doubling your fun? Okay, neither do we, actually - there are probably too many long evenings, brutal hangover mornings and dates with the bong in college between then and now to remember much of anything. At any rate, Double will be the word of the night on Tuesday when we have not uno but dos shows for your delectation and amusement

nov3rd_Final

- one at our usual time of 8pm, and at 9PM. Not only that, but each show will have (cue hot twins singing, uh, “double double” something) a pair of guests. That’s a grand total of four guests in one night!

First and second up are Nicolas Wright and Andrea Abbate. Nicolas, once upon a time (i.e. 2004) the winner of “Best Newcomer” in the “Just for Laughs” festival, is an up-and-coming actor featured on the up-and-coming new CBS sitcom Accidentally on Purpose. Nicolas plays Davis, a freeloading associate of the show’s lead Billie (Jenna Elfman, who the “elite” LFTF research department is convinced might have been one of the Doublemint Twins). Nicolas previously acted in movies such as Circle of Friends and The Greatest Game Ever Played, in addition to producing, directing, writing and starring in his own short film, Toutouffe. Speaking of Accidentally on Purpose, we also have one of the show’s writer/producers with us, the lovely and dangerously funny Andrea Abbate. In addition to her adventures in TV land, Andrea is a gifted comedienne, actress and writer, contributing her talents to many offline and online media. These include stand-up comedy (you can see clips of her on FunnyOrDie.com, for example) theater (Andrea authored the play “Random Acts of Kindness”) and varied and extremely funny writings, many of which can be found on her web site andreaabbate.com.

Once the first show wraps, Stu, Jessie and The Fulron will retreat to their respective trailers, get expensive massages, drink a glass of vino or six, and return to the studio for episode #2. This edition will feature another pair of talents, actors Hal B. Klein and Leyna Weber. You’ve seen or will see Hal in movies such as Bottle Shock and the very-soon-to-be-released Jack and the Beanstalk, but he’s also got another talent he puts to good use - cooking. In fact, Hal’s got his own online cooking program and blog, www.thismanskitchen.com, in which he de-mystified the art of cuisine and makes it okay for guys to serve offerings like spicy lemon sherbert. He’s so good, he can even teach Stu how to concoct a dish or two, which he’ll be doing live on-air.

Meanwhile, his co-guest for the hour, Leyna Weber, is a young but already highly experienced actor from Long Island (which happens to be Your Humble Blog Author’s native landmass too, wheee!). She currently appears in the hit web series Road to the Altar starring her and Jaleel White (Urkel from Family Matters), and will be featured in the upcoming mystery/thriller Pig. Which, coincidentally, is the same name as the raw ingredient occasionally used by Hal in his cooking show. Oof, we’re getting hungry again. Can you tell we’ve been eating too much surplus Halloween candy? Bring on the meat and carbohydrates, folks, it’s gonna get tasty in here.

Got questions for Nicolas/Andrea/Hal/Leyna? Shoot ‘em right ‘chere.
